Hazel is a very sweet 10-month-old girl who came to us from a place of neglect and severe undernourishment. She had spent around 20 hours per day in a crate and wasn’t fed or socialized properly. Her only outdoor time was spent tied to a cable outside the front door.
She has since gotten back to her normal weight and is now a healthy, rambunctious puppy with lots of energy. Hazel absolutely craves that all attention be on her and as such, she tends to be dominant over other dogs in the household and often instigates rough play with them. She would do well with someone willing to be patient while she learns the ropes of how to be a proper, socialized lady.
She is still hesitant when meeting new people, especially new men, but will warm up to anyone with a little time and a few treats. She is protective of her hoomans when strangers come around and definitely lets it be known using her distinctive vocals ranging from a rich bass-baritone to her deepest basso-profundo.
When she isn’t tearing up soft toys or vigorously chewing on raw bones, she loves to just cuddle up next to the nearest available family member and get belly rubs. Once she gets to know you, she is one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever fostered. She knows well the people who feed her and reciprocates with lots of love and loyalty.
Hazel is an excellent learner – especially food motivated – and has picked up most simple commands in the last month with little trouble. She is okay on leashed walks and is on her best behavior when treats are present. Hazel also loves going on off-leash hikes in private, safely enclosed areas where she can use her sniffer to its full potential. Given her energy levels and more than curious nose, she would do best in a fenced-in yard, free to explore. She is house trained and has no trouble being crated if left alone. She is an excellent car passenger and loves going on drives.
She would do best with someone experienced in dog-ownership and training. I would not recommend her as a first-time dog. Someone willing to be patient and work with her using positive-reinforcement will receive the most loyal, devoted, and steadfast friend…not to mention those beautiful coat colors and a sassy attitude.
